I wonder if this type of situation will end up causing severe damage to the EU. With hungary and poland defending each other it makes it really easy for two nations working together to violate pretty much any part of EU law with impunity. Why should other countries trust and follow the laws when others are just continually breaking them with no consequences? This kind of thing is toxic to a group.

Taiwan is a country. It has its own government, borders, police, military, trade etc. This should not be a big deal to just recognize that. The rest of the world should just recognize Taiwan as a country. China is just being stupid here. They have a lot more to gain by just recognizing Taiwan and having better trade relations. This whole issue seems to exist because China has some weird honor thing going on about Taiwan instead of actually making a rational decision.

I am currently living and working in Germany with friends and family back in the USA. My experience is that on average people in Germany are doing better than in the USA. Affording a place to live is easier, food it cheaper, health care is more available, etc. Those tech companies have huge GDP numbers to the point whey they make up a signnificant portion of the GDP but they put very little money into the economy. Mostly it is a few people that get insanely rich. I think that is part of the problem. The wealthy in the USA are taking nearly all the gains so the super wealthy are better off but normal people are worse off.

@Mastercane98 Taxes are only a little higher than most states once you include healthcare. I know it seems strange but I have lived in both and Germany is nicer to live in

@c.augustedupin8860 If a country does something, like recognizing that Taiwan is a country, that China doesn't like then China cuts off trade. Doesn't that mean if China does something we don't like that we should cut off trade? So, if China is using slave labor with the Uyghur's to produce items and we don't like that then isn't it completely okay for us to cut off trade as a result, at least in the products made with that labor? China has even threatened countries that have said they will Boycott the Olympics. If it is okay to do that then why is it not okay for other countries not to buy Chinese goods? I am not saying that China should be forced to change and not trading with them anymore or cutting trade back is not forcing them.

I certainly hope that the forms of government and organization of the economy we have now is not the best we will ever end up with. If this is really the best we can ever do we should wipe ourselves out now and make way for another species that do better.

@c.augustedupin8860 Because recognizing Taiwan costs them nothing but lowers tensions in the area and improves trade. By every logical metric it makes the most sense. The reason this continues has nothing to do with logic or reason. This kind of behavior hast left many companies leaving China, it has left foreign investment dropping and it has caused high unemployment in China. By every metric this is an irrational decision.

@atari947 My understanding is that Taiwan needs to change their constitution to formally give up their claim to China and China has threatened war if they do that. I don't understand the reason for that though. At this point though there is no practical way that Taiwan is going to take over China and they are two separate countries.

@12345anton6789 I would also say a lot of activities people do don't add much to GDP but do make life better. I go to the bakery with friends and have a sandwich and tea and talk for hours with friends every Sunday.

I am fine with my boss contacting me outside of work hours so long as it is something I don't have to worry about until working hours or will directly impact the working hours. I have had my boss tell me that there is going to be a transit strike or a severe storm etc. and that I could just work from home. Or he would finally get a dataset I needed and sent it to me so I could work on it the next day. I have ever had him call once to tell me that someone we had been working on had just been finished and accepted. I agree entirely with the idea of the law that your boss should not be contacting you outside of work hours for more work related tasks or to ask about work related tasks.

They have probably been working with Kyle Hill. He keeps pretending he is not a supervillain but we all know better. It is really too bad what is going to happen to your country. It is probably a good time to learn to swim. :)

@evoluxman9935 Then it needs to be done with the Eu and USA working together so that it is too big to stop trade with. We also need to work at disentangling our economies. Just giving into this behavior is dangerous. China has shown they will use their leverage for something like this. What happens when they push that leverage for something else? China has even tried to claim all the airspace around Japan several times.

@Vicente-en2zx Until very recently it just didn't get hot enough for that. Maybe one week out of the year would get into the 80s. Even now they are making buildings that do a better job of radiating away the heat instead of using air conditioning. It makes the builidings a little more expensive to build but it saves a LOT of power.

I don't like the EU rules that Feta is only from Greece and Champagne is only from a certain region of France. If something is essentially chemically the same I don't see a problem with giving it the same name. That is probably something the USA and EU will never agree on. Overall I think much more limited in scope trade deals are a better idea where they can be done on something that is good for both economies and don't end up lowering standards in both areas.

Why did Finland get low rankings on LGBT rights? At least from what I can see online and from friends that live there it seems to have some of the most open LGBT laws in the world.

The EU should have been involved from a negotiation standpoint but lets be honest most of the reason that NATO is not working well is because of EU countries. It is supposed to be a mutual defense treat and quite frankly outside of maybe France and a few eastern EU countries none of the countries can actually hold up the mutual aspect. Germany, for instance, has the strongest economy in the EU but has not even spent the bare minimum agreed to for NATO on their military. If Russia or China invades the EU I am sure that the USA will intervene but I don't see the EU coming to the aid of the USA because I don't think they have the capability to.

@spaghettiisyummy.3623 Samsung makes real products and employs many people.

@Robespierre-lI Nothing at all.

Hauke Holst Tesla is a specific trademarked name. Champagne and feta have long since become common names over the centuries. Just like dumpster, bandaid etc.

@lvbcoan660 Every product should have to pass safety standards and accuracy standards of labeling. However, if something is chemically identical to honey then it is honey. The same way that if I can create meat synthetically it is still meat so long as everything is reproduced. I really doubt that synthetic honey is chemically the same as real honey on anything other than some simple tests.
1
@lvbcoan660 I am a chemical engineer. When I think of two things being chemically the same I am thinking of a very precise definition for that. Food is not an art, it is a chemical reaction. There is a great deal of science involved but many choose not to learn and call it an art. There is no way that the chinese stuff would taste different but be chemically the same as real honey. What this indicates is that the simple tests we use to check for honey are just being gamed and I agree that is wrong. Overall I don't think we should be trading with china anymore anyways for a wide range of reasons including cheating on products. For feta cheese I have not noticed any difference between the stuff from greece and the stuff from reputable companies in the usa and other countries.

@kaworunagisa4009 We definitely seem to be taking the path of wiping ourselves out.

@LukerYT And then you get into the problem of international collaborations where you are working with teams all over the world and trying to figure out where different people's working hours are. It seems better to allow sending the messages at any time and they can arrive at any time but you have legal right to do nothing about them until the start of your working hours.

Giant tech companies don't help the economy they help GDP. GDP is just an easy but imperfect proxy for the economy. Look at the numbers adjusted to local purchasing power and the economies are much closer. It ids better to gocus on lots of small to medium sized companies and do some trust breaking on the huge ones.

@saiyedakhtar3931 You did a better job of saying it than I did and I agree completely. If I wanted to keep the same quality of apartment and I moved back to where I could live in a similar walkable areas as I live in Germany I would need about $70K/year just to pay for the cost difference in rent. That would not even pay for food and other increases. I have looked at the numbers and as best I can tell I would be worse off if I went back to the USA and others I know and work with are worse off. I just don't see the USA doing so amazingly better.
1
@saiyedakhtar3931 If I moved back to the USA to live in a walkable area I would end up somewhere like Boston due to the industry I am in. Rent there is about 4x what it is where I live now. Any area that needs a car is not a viable option.

@TheCyricson That is sad to hear. The people I know that live there think they have good laws but they are also not LGBT so they are not the best people to really know. At least from what I have read of the laws they are supposed to be quite progressive but it could also be the laws are progressive and the people are not.
