I don't like the EU rules that Feta is only from Greece and Champagne is only from a certain region of France. If something is essentially chemically the same I don't see a problem with giving it the same name. That is probably something the USA and EU will never agree on. Overall I think much more limited in scope trade deals are a better idea where they can be done on something that is good for both economies and don't end up lowering standards in both areas.

@Robespierre-lI Nothing at all.

Hauke Holst Tesla is a specific trademarked name. Champagne and feta have long since become common names over the centuries. Just like dumpster, bandaid etc.

@lvbcoan660 Every product should have to pass safety standards and accuracy standards of labeling. However, if something is chemically identical to honey then it is honey. The same way that if I can create meat synthetically it is still meat so long as everything is reproduced. I really doubt that synthetic honey is chemically the same as real honey on anything other than some simple tests.

@lvbcoan660 I am a chemical engineer. When I think of two things being chemically the same I am thinking of a very precise definition for that. Food is not an art, it is a chemical reaction. There is a great deal of science involved but many choose not to learn and call it an art. There is no way that the chinese stuff would taste different but be chemically the same as real honey. What this indicates is that the simple tests we use to check for honey are just being gamed and I agree that is wrong. Overall I don't think we should be trading with china anymore anyways for a wide range of reasons including cheating on products. For feta cheese I have not noticed any difference between the stuff from greece and the stuff from reputable companies in the usa and other countries.
