Taiwan is a country. It has its own government, borders, police, military, trade etc. This should not be a big deal to just recognize that. The rest of the world should just recognize Taiwan as a country. China is just being stupid here. They have a lot more to gain by just recognizing Taiwan and having better trade relations. This whole issue seems to exist because China has some weird honor thing going on about Taiwan instead of actually making a rational decision.

@c.augustedupin8860 If a country does something, like recognizing that Taiwan is a country, that China doesn't like then China cuts off trade. Doesn't that mean if China does something we don't like that we should cut off trade? So, if China is using slave labor with the Uyghur's to produce items and we don't like that then isn't it completely okay for us to cut off trade as a result, at least in the products made with that labor? China has even threatened countries that have said they will Boycott the Olympics. If it is okay to do that then why is it not okay for other countries not to buy Chinese goods? I am not saying that China should be forced to change and not trading with them anymore or cutting trade back is not forcing them.

@c.augustedupin8860 Because recognizing Taiwan costs them nothing but lowers tensions in the area and improves trade. By every logical metric it makes the most sense. The reason this continues has nothing to do with logic or reason. This kind of behavior hast left many companies leaving China, it has left foreign investment dropping and it has caused high unemployment in China. By every metric this is an irrational decision.

@atari947 My understanding is that Taiwan needs to change their constitution to formally give up their claim to China and China has threatened war if they do that. I don't understand the reason for that though. At this point though there is no practical way that Taiwan is going to take over China and they are two separate countries.

@evoluxman9935 Then it needs to be done with the Eu and USA working together so that it is too big to stop trade with. We also need to work at disentangling our economies. Just giving into this behavior is dangerous. China has shown they will use their leverage for something like this. What happens when they push that leverage for something else? China has even tried to claim all the airspace around Japan several times.
