You have to hate yourself to start a PhD. I speak from experience on that one.

@georgepappas45 What a strange response. I did a PhD for making computer models to make medicine. Nobody cared about my political views. It was certainly a good experience and got me a very nice job. It is just that I still think that many parts of getting a phd are quite difficult and you need to be sure that is what you want to do before you do it.

So you are saying that if we discover that something we are doing is going to kill millions of people and scientists discover that they should not point out that what we are doing is going to kill millions of people? They can't say that things like natural gas stoves are a bad idea because of what they do to indoor air quality and the effect that has on your lungs long term? Who else is going to tell you that? Politicians will not do that because that would be bad for the businesses that back them.

I do think we have a problem with making things more complicated on purpose. During my PhD I ran into issues where my papers was no considered scientific enough. My advisor told me that what that meant is that I needed to make it more complicated. I used to use less simple language and add replace the simple explanations that used pseudocode with more complex math. I am sure you have had this experience also where you read a paper and it is FAR more complicated than is necessary. Scientists even start talking like that over time and so you end up with a group of very smart people that talk in a way that is very hard for a normal person to understand. As an example if you look at boundary conditions for equations we talk about natural, essential, and many other different types. I tended to just write that I assumed the function had a constant value of x or the derivative had a constant value of y etc. The first requires that you remember the special names and what they mean, the second does not.
