I loved the work I did in my PhD and the doors it has opened for me, but I am happy that I used that to get a good industry job. I would never stay in academia. Academia seems to be such a miserable place. What I have found is that doing research in industry, for me, has involved more actual research and higher quality output and more of a focus on things actually working. I have come to accept that most scientific papers are garbage. They just don't work, they leave out critical information, and will often not respond to questions about it. I know this happens because of publish or perish but it still annoys me. It is more likely that advice from reddit or stack overflow works on machine learning than a paper in nature.
