Actually, you can't just keep increasing the size of the container LONG before it becomes larger than the planet. The reactions inside the flask are exothermic. You don't have to increase it by too much before you need active cooling and at larger sizes you need some fairly complicated cooling that is seen in large bioreactors used for making medicine. At some point though you still hit a limit and the bacteria will create so much heat that they kill themselves. The other problem is oxygen. If you keep increasing the size of the system it becomes harder and harder to get enough oxygen into the solution. What you end up with is large areas with no oxygen as it has all been consumed before it gets to those area. Adding oxygen is really hard to do at larger sizes because diffusion is not enough but you also can't create bubbles. The gas/liquid interface created by a bubble has a large shearing force which is destructive to a lot of single cell organisms.
