From living in Germany now for about 7 years I can tell you that most Europeans would not date an American to get a green card. The vast majority of them don't want to move to the USA and look at it with a mixture of horror and curiosity fairly often. During Covid it seems that Germany mostly looked at the USA for a lesson on what not to do. We need to do X policy or we will end up like Florida kind of stuff.

@MaMastoast I have heard some refer to it as horror comedy.

At first I thought it was strange to pay to use the bathrooms in Germany. One of the things I realized is the bathrooms are MUCH better maintained. This really only applies in places like train stations. Usually businesses in the train station also have a bathroom credit if you buy something. The price is normally 50 cents or 1 euro. This kind of stuff does not apply to restraunts, movie theaters, trains, etc. All of those bathrooms are free since you are paying to go into those places.

I also love that in Germany and other EU countries I have seen so far bakeries are more than just where you buy bread. They usually have sandwiches, tea, coffee, etc. type of stuff. People will meet there, have something to eat, and relax for a few hours with some friends.

I'm and engineer and I push for using metric base units everywhere that it makes sense, especially in computer simulations. I have seen far too many things screwed up because of errors related to units. There are a few exceptions I can think of. When dealing with very high energy systems instead of mass in kg it can make more sense to look at mass in eV using E=mc^2 so that everything is in energy units. You still use SI energy units though. The one unit we have that is still annoying is time. That one is annoying as hell. For anything less than 1 second you have decimal units which is great. Above that you have 60s =1 min 60 min = 1 hr, 24 hrs = 1 day etc. etc. it is a mess. For that reason I try to use only seconds and conversions are done only for output.

I am currently living in Germany but I am from the USA. If I moved back to the USA my transportation costs would massively increase (I don't need a car here). I would also have much higher food costs and rent is about 3x what it is in Germany for about the same quality of apartment in the cities I would end up in back in the USA. It is really not hard to live better in Europe than in the USA which is really sad. Oh don't forget that you have minimum 25 days of vacation, paid family leave, health care, job security, etc.

I am living in Germany, as an American, and I just don't see how walmart could ever work here. Markets are mixed with the housing so most people don't live more than about 5 minute walk from fresh bakeries and markets. These are mostly small discount stores that have all of the normal stuff you need. Walmarts are huge stores and that would mean having to travel much further to get to one. Also because stores are so close most people in Germany have small freezers are refrigerators. Why store a bunch of food when you can just walk to the store in a few minutes? In the USA most people I knew would go to the store 1 every week or two and stock up on a LOT of stuff while in Germany mostly people go every 2 days or so.

Homelessness is not unique to the USA but the scale of the problem is. I can't think of any other country that allows the problem to get so bad.
