@starfox300 At least most of the people I know in the USA can't afford those things. The jobs that pay well are in high cost of living areas and that makes the housing unaffordable. My boss has those things but he also works a lot more than me every week and has less vacation time and is under a lot more stress.

@emjayay I was in Boston just a few weeks ago and stayed there for a few weeks. Groceries where about 3x what they are than where I live in Germany. I went to target, a whole foods, and another supermarket I forget the name of and they where all high.
1
@west8864 I said I went to several supermarkets and they where all quite high. To get to one further away I would have had to take an Uber and that would have had to be factored into the cost of groceries.

@earlysda I have looked at other USA cities also but only ones I would actually live in. Considering what has been happening I would only consider liberal states and I look for places with a biotech industry. So I have also looked at places like Boulder, Colorado. San Francisco (NOPE) and some others. I am comparing based on my actual options and where I feel okay living.

@jasonriddell I agree. At least from what I have experienced living in Germany so far even the low income places are nicer than many normal places I have stayed in the USA. I think being mixed REALLY helps.
1
@jasonriddell As much as possible I would like to have all the units mixed. You can't avoid market neighborhoods entirely but I would want them reduced as much as possible. From what I have read societies are more stable and better long term when you don't have social classes isolated from each other.

@walkir2662 I think the case where I talk to people outside of normal work hours is when I am traveling internationally. I let my boss know the status of my trip as I go just in case something happens. At least then if a flight is missed, a train is late, etc. then I have someone that is aware of what is going on and can quickly help resolve the issue.

@Helmut_Kohl on the phone front I am waiting till after June 20th for new phone models to be introduced. A new EU law goes into effect and it requires that phones get os and security upgrades for 5 years AFTER they stop selling the phone. You can also get parts, easier to repair, standards for durability, etc.

I have talked to people before that when their boss found out they where sick they where fired so they lost their employer health insurance. I am pretty sure that is illegal but they will come up with some other reason to fire you and the odds of you winning in court is pretty low. Even if you have a good job in the USA and good healthcare you can lose it within minutes with a text message that you have been fired.

@lost.projects387 I think part of the issue is that in Germany it is easy to live a few train stops away on a regional line and have a much lower cost of living. With the USA that just doesn't exist almost everywhere. Everything is tied to a car so you need a car and all the expenses that go with it and it is so hard to find car free places to live.
1
@nics4967 I was in Boston. Even moving an hour commute outside the city is expensive. If you live in an area where you can easily live car free it is even more expensive and a car is not an option for me.
1
@sanzharnaizabekov8166 Why do you see success in life tied to having a big house or car? Most rent because that is actually cheaper over the long term and have good retirements. They are not surviving on government handouts they are using a system they invested in. They have more time over their lives to enjoy life. They spend less of their lives working and more of it traveling. I can buy a car, I don't own a car, I will never own a car. I do not like cars and I don't think they should be allowed in cities outside of actual working vehicles. Cars are an expensive and dangerous quickly depreciating asset that over the course of your life costs you millions of dollars.
1
@BillJohnston-y7o I can get a house if I want, that is not really a problem. I can also travel all over the place, I just don't use a car. I am planning to take a cruise later along the fjords of Norway and look at the northern lights along with visiting various towns. To me a car feels like a weight around my neck and limits my freedom too much.

The USA will become less car dependent because there is not a choice. Car dependence is bankrupting cities and the constant expansion to make new suburbs for the cash infusion and then using that to pay for maintenance is failing. The cost of city services is just too high for the spread out tax base. I expect more infill development in cities and for them to become less car dependent.
