  1. The EU has done this standard before. They mandated micro-usb at one point and Apple got around that by shipping an adapter. The EU does not want a repeat of that so they are updating the standard to usb-c. Actually I would need to read the text to see for sure because phones in the EU have already mostly switched to USB-C so I think the standard must have some kind of upgradability in it.
