  1. How does this analysis not perfectly describe America? The parties choose who you will vote for, the parties run the caucus and the whole shebang. The gov continuously ignores facts when convenient. And the whole Russian influence on elections is so overblown, to say that they are transmitting anything to an audience that is significant in any way is asinine. The reach was miniscule and the data breach has been shown to be local IE downloaded from the source, so in effect the highest amount of fake anything is coming from local sources. Not to give Putin or Russia a free pass but when was the last time Noam Chomsky or the like was on CNN or MSNBC? If you want to live in a world that makes smart, forward looking choices for the better of society then free education and maternity leave are forward looking economic stimulus paid for by tax.   74. Hard determinism says we have no free will. We are basically effects of an initial cause. Of course this is based on evidence at hand IE the big bang being the initiator(cause). Sure from a purely logical basis it makes sense and is almost undeniable. That being said, the amount of awareness we have, our ability to process it and our subjective natures make it really difficult to say "what is" on such a scale. What happened before expansion occurred is a mystery. I mostly fall into the hard determinism camp from a logical viewpoint, the only reason I have to dispute is purely anecdotal. I actually discovered the idea of hard determinism 20 years before hearing about it, during an acid trip in my youth, I saw it like an irresistible wave passing through people, one to another causing their actions. Perceiving this as something horrible, I "removed" myself from the flow of things, symbolically of course, by moving to the other side of the room away from people. This broke the flow and people not only realized it immediately but did not like it one bit. All at once 10 or so people literally freaked out at me for changing the flow of things. haha. Does this mean there is wiggle room? Maybe. Maybe there is something in the pie that has determined that there needs to be more wiggle room? And if so does that make it actual? lol?

  76. I found the study but under a paywall so I can't verify it in any way but I don't think the mothers wage "decreases", what happens is time away from work has its own penalty. The same would occur if I took a year off work to go to Tibet, I would miss opportunity. And funny that one of the reasons for the pay gap is actually mentioned, men work longer hours. The efficiency factor mentioned in this video is not really corroborated in any way by this talk, not in a way that would give them an advantage anyway. I agree that mothers are more efficient than women that are not but how far does that go and is it even something worthy of mention here?

Uber is operating outside regulations imposed on taxi services thus it can be seen as being cheaper since overhead is lower. But this means a discrepancy in liability since cabs have up to 5 million in insurance for driver and passenger.

The difference in price between Uber and a regular taxi service is minimal without the insurance and other overhead. Once these come into play, Uber will fail. Uber takes 20% off the top. Add in gas, insurance, upkeep and lease and the drivers are not making much more than regular cabbies.

  160. 1. Everyone pays tax, most tax is basically spent on bureaucracy so this is a social benefit, taxes returning to society. Most employers offer leaves of absence regardless of reason. Temp help is often cheaper. 2. It's not irrelevant, it is an argument against the model. People are saying it is sexist but it is for any sex. We are not debating the morality of ANY tax, because that is the real issue. Any tax taken and spent will fall under the same category. 3. Do you understand what stimulus means? You can't make an economy out of it but in this case it is taxes RETURNING to the system. And again, this is an argument people are using against the model, that it is not part of their GDP(as if you can sell maternity leave lol). 4. It's not "free".....are you not taxed? Do you not see the fat government around you all gilded and shiny? Filled with "public servants" that make more than average for their labor, have more job security and social benefits than the public they serve? Wouldn't it be better if that money went back to the people? In short, as I explained, this "free" education is investment into society. It is better to have a society based on an educated populace. Sure the current system could have more choice etc, but that is not the issue. Your argument is against Socialism basically but until taxes are abolished, you are stuck with it in some form because that is what they are, a redistribution of wealth...usually only to the rich at this point, the pittance that trickles down is not worth even a mention.

  162. We share a burden as a society, "bad choices" are sometimes mistakes or forced upon us. If you make a bad choice, and get in a car accident, should society not contribute to your healthcare? It's not their fault right? But wait...you paid taxes for this very thing, why shouldn't you get something in return?
