Patrick Lancaster has been in Eastern Ukraine for over a decade documenting the operations against it by Kiev, this has a lot more to do with the current operations than Russia's internal perspective. Sure NATO is a factor but they used the populations of Eastern Ukraine to draw them into this conflict.

It's because you play ball with NATO or else, its not a hard equation. It's not Russia surrounding other countries with military bases, its the other way around and those nations have no lack of invading other nations in their recent history.
