Korea has the same thing: they mostly only allow one citizenship at a time. Some countries have mandatory male conscription which can be a problem since these people would need to pledge their allegiance to one country. Not to excuse Japan for its past but you have to think about the politics of countries that are near hostile ones.

Maybe because it has to do with their laws and their policies. Even if you have friendly relations, one country may have mandatory military service while the other doesn't. For example, do you want someone to have dual citizenship with South Korea and not serve in the military? That would piss off a bunch of people.

@MrBiwako2012 a quick Google search of dual citizenship with mandatory service will point that you are incorrect. I knew a guy from college who was Korean and when he turned 20 he was asked to serve in the Korean military or give up his citizenship. He chose the latter and got US citizenship

@MrBiwako2012 you are only allowed dual citizenship until you turn 18, after which you cannot hold two and must choose one

I'm against it. One reason is that if you have to serve in the military, you need to pick which country to serve. You cannot pledge your allegiance to two countries during war.

Japan won't allow it. Either you stay Argentinian or go Japanese.

You do need to pay more taxes though. There are pros and cons to this

It's not only Japan. China and Singapore don't allow it either. South Korea is a mixed bag since I knew one guy who moved to the US and was being asked if he wants to retain Korean or US citizenship. If he wanted to keep his original, he would need to do mandatory service. He renounced Korean and decided to enlist in the US military to get citizenship.
