The French police have been trashing anywhere north of the Elysée for most of the summer in the Pensions riots, as far as the Saint-Denis river bend, and this happened inside that bend. Turning the suburbs into a war-zone isn't endearing them to anyone other than a hillbilly redneck farmer in the Carmargue, a long way from anywhere.

This pull-back is while the next year's conscript cannon-fodder are processed. You don't make a real soldier, experienced in the wiles of war, in six weeks. Meanwhile, so confident is the US that Russia will provoke a wider war, the US has moved most of its obsolescent aircraft to Poland. Obsolescent they may be, but they're still far better than anything Russia's got, and in much larger numbers. Between 200 and 300 A-10 Warthogs, for example.
