If the news reporters would get "too firm" on him, his son could like begin to cry (or sobber), thus directing the guilt away from his father (& back on the reporters). It also works as a deterrent from getting into any serious conversations. Furthermore it also gives Musk a more "softer public image" (him being a father & all).
