I can understand how a relatively young democracy can lapse into a seemly secure authoritarian status quo. Mounting corruption without competition will lead to mounting insecurities along with a diminished ability to solve social problems which then induces general instability. The eventual call for reformation, a return to a more refined democratic process is inclusive of individual participation by the populace.

An Autocrat, along with acquiring great wealth and power might desire control over his populace's gene pool. Directing and stimulating the birth rate by mobilizing the general public, minority cleansing, and importing qualifying second-class citizens, while indoctrinating youth into a structured society that insures the ruler's continued regime and agenda.

Democracy might be seen as the best problem-solving mechanism for the relationship between the state and the individual. Common consensus can thereby respond within a political framework to the benefit of the largest number. Voter apathy is the greatest deterent to Democracy.

Imperialism requires unlimited resources and cheap labor which in turn implies continued encroachment and expansion. Without a new frontier or a power vacuum to fill, Imperialism is destined for failure.

From designer shoes to t-shirts and caps with an American cheeseburger in hand, the Russian consumer has an apetite for Western pop culture. With the eventual ending of sanctions, I would expect western cultural tastes to rebound in full force within Russia. This current effort to purify a multi-faceted indigenous culture of its outside influences is too little, too late.
