My first and main criteria to decide on any issue is whether the claims or proposed course of action is evidence based or not. If not evidence based then it will be rejected regardless of which political party or other group is promoting it. The evidence, based on Putin's own writings is that once Ukraine was subdued Russia's near term targets would be Moldova and the Suwalki Gap. Ukraine is fighting to keep Russia out of Western Europe and therefore deserves our aid and assistance. Chinese leaders many times have threatened Taiwan with military force, without demonstrably strong and determined Taiwanise allies China might well be tempted to embark on an invasion. My conclusion is the Russia must not be allowed to succeed in its invasion of a neighbour.

A tactical nuclear weapon(s) would certainly blow a hole in Ukrainian lines, but to exploit that hole Russia would first have to mass tanks and supporting armoured vehicles behind the lines and of course move the weapon(s) out of storage. It is certain that this would be noticed by the Western powers which would result intense diplomatic discussions and possible pre-emptive strikes(s). Assuming everything goes well for the Russians, they have a hole in Ukrainian lines that they can exploit but Ukrainian forces elsewhere will be largely unaffected so once that encroachment into Ukraine is sealed off the war will simply continue but now with possible direct NATO involvement.

We also have Omicron which is likely to rapidly spread. An infection with both varieties would likely be bad and may not end well. On a positive note vaccination rates are high and rising and some restrictions eg masks still in place.

Obviously the numbers are estimates based upon assumptions, to my way of thinking the assumptions were reasonable, for example when a vehicle is destroyed it is assumed that it had a full crew and half of its passenger capacity. Although the Ukrainian figures are likely to not be precise that are similar to those released by British Intelligence, ISW etc so I am prepared to accept as being reasonably accurate (+/- 10%) and giving the trend line. As a rough calculation for Putin to achieve his goal of completely subjugating Ukraine will involve many millions (possibly as high as 10 million) Russian casualties.

The purpose was (in addition to the physical damage) to send Russia two messages, firstly if you damage our infrastructure (ie Nordstream) we'll damage yours and secondly if we can do this so easily just think what the effect would be of a serious attack should you use nuclear weapons.

  1885. Agree, the real world evidence is that the pfizer vaccine is highly effective with extremely rare adverse side effects. If the trial was flawed then the extent of those flaws didn't affect the validity of the overall conclusion. Vaccination remains our best defense against the virus.

As I see it the only realistic scenario for the war to end is for Ukraine to have a major military victory which leads to a political collapse in Russia and the removal of Putin either via civil war or a catastrophic window malfunction. Putin's replacement is likely to be equally murderous but less wedded to the continuation of the war.
