No, it didn't go well, because as usual, secular rulers are ambitious, and religion makes a convenient scapegoat for basically a the ist violence. Dude, you KNOW what these countries are like. You would NOT like a Turkish empire. If they could get their s**t together and keep the Eastern and Western Christians from uniting, they could cause a lot of trouble, but there is no way that their increased power is desirable. At all.

It has its roots in the devout reaction to "al Minha", which is what your "enlightened" and "secularized" Mutalizim did when they got power (see another of my comments on the subject.)
