"They were arrogant and started wars with the three greatest powers on the planet" To be fair, last time around they beat the Russians easily but couldn't quite beat the combined French and British, and were only hosed when the Americans came in. If they concluded beating the French and British easily meant that beating the Russians would be a walk in the park, they had a non-zero amount of evidence for that conclusion.

"Pure Darwinism says we should breed as much as possible -- it's possible to do that, but it's not what makes us happy" The vast majority of people are deeply regretful -- in ways that cause acute misery -- if they do not have children. Evolution is important enough that we should be skeptical of protests to the contrary.
