We used to have about half the population dedicated to mental health. This was the other significant part of women's role in society, and went along with their primary role of keeping babies alive. Communities formed to provide respite for women exhausted from child care, and these communities looked after one another when terrible things happened (like, babies were lost.) You know how most marriages that experience the loss of a child, now end? It didn't used to be that way. Women used to bring communities together to help people through such griefs. Now? Babies just don't die like they used to (and thank God they don't), and every young person has become an itinerant, atomized individual looking only for their own career. The scaffolding that used to hold our civilization up has been dismantled because we thought that it was no longer necessary. Turns out, it was holding up more than we expected.
