  1. The only positive aspect of "strangeness" that Nellie Bowles points out, is starting ridiculous-sounding companies. When strangeness is simply a matter of bodily perversion, there's no positive use to it, and actual public health benefits to dissuading it. That said, it's difficult to overstate how much the eccentrics and "odd ducks" can benefit society, when their obsessiveness is directed at things like gardening, algorithm optimization, or the most accurate historical details that can be mustered for equipment used at the Battle of Waterloo. Their fascinations are at worst harmless, and at best, can lead to some of the most important innovations (or preservations) in society.

  2. Easly in the war, someone once asked Winston Churchill, "Why are we fighting the Germans?" Churchill replied, "If we stop fighting the Germans, we'll find out quickly enough why we should've kept fighting." Looking at the urban h**lscape that is San Francisco (or CHAZ / CHOP) shouldn't drive anyone into nihilism. It should simply reinforce any Conservative and Christian ideas about what is truly right and wrong. Maybe you have these ideas already and they're strengthened, or maybe you've only heard of them and you decide to adopt them. Either way, San Francisco is the best argument for them. Maybe there is no hope of winning the "drug war", but are we not seeing a case where surrendering means living as slaves?
