  2. If you want to "get to know the Russian soul", just read War and Peace. Tolstoy deliberately and systematically explores what Russians are about, with each of his characters. He explores the French a little bit as well, once we finally meet a "gallant" Frenchman in Moscow (as opposed to the wannabe Frenchman Pierre, who at that point has been reminded of his Russian-ness by Natasha calling him "Pyotr"). He comes to the conclusion that believing that the tide of the Grand Armee flooding into Russia and then receding is any kind of historical inevitability based on "the character of the French" and "the character of the Russians", leaving his exploration behind with a helpless shrug... it's just one of those things that happens in our fallen world, and things are better when we treat one another with love and consideration instead. At least, that's what I got out of it, I could simply have missed it.
