"It only takes one tasteless joke to normalize sexual aggression" No, it takes a deliberate police policy, sustained over years or decades, of ignoring grooming gangs.

Are these the same people who made sure there were no consequences for grooming gangs who operated over years or decades?

@kamrudkd It's more Americans than Westerners, it seems to me. In America, it's common to go out to seek your fortune before finding a wife, and because you might never return home, find that wife where you find your fortune. What you're describing is normal for many American communities where kids don't go and seek their fortune, or at least come back once they've found it.

@kamrudkd Can the Islamic world really claim success on avoiding the problems of "atomized young men" though? They're famous for being raw meat for jihadi organizations. Birthrates in the Islamic world are falling just like in the West. Not in every area though and in some and in areas where the alienation of young men is at its worst, birthrates are still some of the highest -- so the data is noisy at best. I honestly agree with the idea that families can be extremely helpful in finding suitable matches for young people. As long as there's a healthy sense of "these two people are going to be the ones having to live with each other, so their feelings should absolutely not be ignored", easing the trouble of the dating scene is in fact a great thing. Independent dating worked for a while, though. It's only taking it to its extreme that failed. All that said, I think that families noticing that some young people might be suitable for one another goes a long way to de-risking the dating landscape, and that de-risking could be the critical point in getting us out of the trouble we're in.
