The best thing Elon Musk could have someone else do, is open a few contracts to provide fuel depots for his Mars mission -- preferably at some transit point in the Earth-Moon system, maybe in a halo orbit around E/M Langrange point 2. Or, around Earth / Sun L2. This would give the asteroid miners an anchor contract to fill. Giving asteroid mining (or in NASA-speak, "in situ resource utilization") a boost like this, would radically expand our idea of the potential scope of human activity throughout the solar system.

  2. The biggest problem with terraforming Venus, is the planet rotates veeeeeery slowly. If the place weren't smothered in an insulating blanket of atmosphere, it would have howling winds along the day / night terminator line.
