One of China's great works of literature, "Outlaws of the Marsh", is about an empire in which the highest honors in the land are given to incompetents (the prime minister was given his job literally because of his street football moves) and the only ones left to stop the impending Mongol invasion, are the coarsest anti-heroes imaginable. It seems to me that England might find itself in the same position, today.

"You show them kindness, which they will take as weakness, and they will sink their teeth into your neck." Yes. The enemies of Western Civilization have weaponized our compassion against us. Extracting ourselves from that trap is not as hard as it sounds -- while being compassionate, just keep stating the simple truth (men are not women, etc), and act accordingly.

If Hitchens is devoted to despair as somehow healthy, I think it might be healthiest to despair of Hitchens. Give him his due honors, but it might be best not to give him too much of a chance to spread his attitude to those still willing to fight.

@milkshake519 Apparently so, it's described pretty directly in the book.

@paulteuscher3614 Yes, it has about three different titles, in translation. Ever since finding a wargame based on the novel back when I was 10, I've been waiting for "Three Kingdoms" to drop "Romance" from its title. I'm glad they finally came around to that little brand decision. I'm very surprised that Hollywood hasn't grabbed onto these stories in their never-ending quest for Chinese money, and for "the next Game of Thrones". Too many heroic men, I guess?

@abigailslade3824 Today's "moralistic crises" involve celebrating debauched behavior that is in fact utterly immoral, in many cases. Today's moralizers' favorite hobby is to look at heroes from the past, or even regular people from the 80's, and call them "immoral". If Hitchens is giving up because he is unwilling to accept help from people with a flawed past, no wonder he's despaired, but it only points to the folly of despair.
