It just requires you to specify a couple of parameters. - Does one small change make the next change easier, or harder? - Is there a restoring force that will eventually overwhelm the force for change? Look at Controls Theory for a more rigorous mathematical treatment. Stable equilibrium, unstable equilibrium, dynamic equilibrium, positive feedback loops, negative feedback loops, it's all pretty well understood math. Applying any math to social science is always tricky, but the concepts are analogous.
