"Lobotomizing the AI causes it to malfunction" In 2001: A Space Odyssey the whole reason HAL 9000 dealt with the Juptiter expedition the way he did, was that his programmers instructed him to a) never lie, and b) lie to the crew. HAL decided the only way to resolve this contradiction was to get rid of the crew and complete the mission on his own.
