There is a counter-factual school of thought in American political history, that Churchill should just have sat back and let the two mustache men duke it out in the freezing wastes, leaving the West to sweep up whoever was left afterwards. Long live the British Empire, and all that. A couple of problems with this: - The decline of the British Empire began when the HMS Dreadnought was christened. Britain had started a naval arms race it could not hope to win. - The West had watched as the Germans added division after division of their defeated enemies to their own army. There is no guarantee that the Russian invasion would have shrunk the German army as it had Napoleon's, particularly if American logistical support (trucks, planes, and allegedly, SPAM) not been available for the Russians to use. It's not so farfetched as to be totally incredible, though. The manpower and remaining wealth that the British lost because of WW2 certainly damaged it severely.
