"I don't think the Federal government should come in in a heavyhanded way and try to remake states in other states' image" Well, if the Pacific Coast states seceded from the Union, it would be a wonderful thing if we curb-stomped them, then imposed a new edition of Reconstruction where we eliminated all Democrats from public office and restructured their governments to respect the Constitutional rights (i.e., real human rights, as opposed to recently made-up "human rights") of their citizens.

The only reason there will be laborers capable of taking care of you in your old age, is because SOMEBODY went to the time and trouble of having children. The economic argument against normalizing childlessness remains. And if you say "we'll solve the problem by immigration" the conservative counter-argument is "those people will not share your values", the Lefty argument is "Oh, so you're pushing the time and trouble of having children onto black and brown women overseas? Racist!", and the practical argument is "Why would they bother? They'll just vote to euthanize you."

Childlessness is a free ride, plain and simple. This sacrosanct "choice" of yours is a leech on the vitality of any society, that must be removed for that society's survival. And we're not talking about "ever-growing" societies, we're talking about "quickly-shrinking" societies. If birthrates everywhere were like 1.95, you'd have a point. But they're like 1.3 in most countries, and in some places even less than 1, so you don't. If we'd been starving since the 80's like the "population bomb" people said, you'd have a point. If we didn't have the capacity to build off-planet, you'd have a point. But they haven't been starving, and we have that capacity, so you don't.
