"My daughter, if she has kids" Unless you set the expectation for your kids that they will have kids in their turn, your culture is already lost. Stop being so shortsighted. THIS is the elephant in the room. We will watch ancient states collapse - Italy, Greece, and Spain first. The more governments depend on immigration, the quicker the collapse of the culture will be -- the more immigrants, the sooner they will cease to be the Western countries they were. If what prosperity they have can survive the cultural shift, that has not yet been demonstrated.

@GreyGirl321 Please consider the fact that women (and men) who expect to retire at some point but don't have children, are basically freeloading off of the rest of us who have invested massive amounts of time, effort, and money in the next generation. Societies who never draft their men to fight off invaders, don't tend to persist either. That's just life. Your worldview is either nihilistic or naive, although it could be both.

@tommorgan7599 Eh, that was riffing on Churchill's line about "ancient kingdoms" behind the Iron Curtain. Italy is only about 150 years old and Greece was Ottoman occupied until roughly the same time period, although Spain is about five centuries old. They've been through fire and war, but what finally brought them down was forgetting how to have kids -- basically, feminism. Future societies will look back at that blunder, and shake their heads at just how stupid it was.

If they are Oxbridge graduates, they will only have the same point of view as the rest. With those who were chosen and promoted by Oxbridge graduates, you get the same problem.

@tommorgan7599 The whole point of marriage is to put together a stable institution to help raise kids. Making that a public contract with legal force behind it, is a good idea. Is our current legal system properly put together to this end? Nope, that's what I'm proposing will help fix. Nihilism won't help anyone or anything, Tom. Keep the marriages together (and mend the ones that are broken) so the kids get raised right. That's just life. Anything else spirals down to death.

@grannyannie2948 Well, if you have a choice between a community who is familiar with you, mediated by your family who has your best interests at heart, and a smartphone computer game full of complete strangers that most richly rewards the most sociopathic players, which do you think would have better results overall? I think we're going to be rediscovering why things were the way they were. Hopefully problems that we've also discovered along with way can get ameliorated, we'll see. I suspect that societies in the year 2100 will more closely resemble societies of 1870, than the society of 2020.

@grannyannie2948 Unfortunately, the current crop of radical activists has specifically targeted institutions (and individuals) that would provide the restoring force for that pendulum. Instead the radical activists are greasing the slippery slope so that they get a "positive" feedback mechanism. It's very neatly done, and unfortunately those of us who remember the old sanity have been slow to take up the old struggle. I fear the radicals will have done a whole lot more damage before most people even notice how severe the damage is. "Experience is an expensive teacher, but some fools will have no other" is what we're looking at here, I believe. You don't have to be particularly sophisticated to hold to the old traditional wisdom. People whose ego requires them to see themselves as sophisticates dismiss that wisdom, and follow the paths of rationality until they find themselves at the same conclusions. The Magi watched the skies for subtle clues, made their calculations, and trekked for weeks to find the Savior. The shepherds, on the other hand, just listened to the angels (with fear and trembling). They both ended up in the same place.

@smythharris2635 "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs" only works at the household level, mate. Groups larger than this -- even extended families -- who try it, tend to break down very fast.

@anthonypreece6599 Set the expectation. There's no force necessary to do that. It works often enough, particularly among people of goodwill. Pretending that the only options are coercive force and absolute silence, is catastrophizing. What you propose is worse than giving up without a fight -- it's giving up without even speaking up. It's lacking in any kind of wisdom or perspective. You might want to verify the wisdom of your own comments before accusing others of being stupid.

@tommorgan7599 At some point, the two didn't hate one another. Quite the opposite, typically. It's more than possible to get people to work through the issues they have, but neither our current system or our current culture encourages that. At all. Any relationship long-term enough to be stable for children is known as a "common-law marriage". Your point there is misleading at best. "Education and resources available" are a cruel joke. At the end of California's divorce process, they ask whether there's anything else California could have done to keep the marriage from dissolving. California systematically does fuck-all to keep marriages from dissolving; their process incentivizes women to do it, in fact. It does not turn out the way you think it does. No-fault divorce should be replaced by filer-at-fault (in the absence of adultery, abandonment, or actual crime). It's not as if that's resorting to issuing dueling pistols, it would provide an essential but currently-absent disincentive, and justly recognize that the person who files that paperwork is committing an evil act by destroying something valuable.

@tommorgan7599 Women can take their "child support" money and use it for drugs, gambling, or international vacations (without the children). There is absolutely no recourse a father has, if she wastes the money. This needs to change as well -- filer-at-fault would prevent women from wrecking men financially, which is all to the good.

@tommorgan7599 Your point of view is naive, having been comprehensively debunked by events of the last 50 years. It will (if our society maintains it) result in more decades of completely avoidable social dysfunction and human suffering. Ultimately, any civilization that holds that point of view will collapse and be replaced by cultures that remember traditional wisdom. I hope you get to enjoy all the benefits of a society where your point of view is no more, and come around to how wrong you have been.

@tommorgan7599 Er, no. What I cited was specifically the Christian point of view on marriage and divorce. The Islamic view on marriage and divorce are different. Exaggeration for the purpose of effect weakens your argument.

@tommorgan7599 Marriage, children, fathers, mothers, and family exist in real life. Love, care, steadfastness, jealousy, pain, and betrayal exist in real life. I'm sure you could say that the Bible is a work of imagination, if you like. What would that prove, though? What produced that imagination? You have two alternatives, God, or millennium after millennium of looking at and thinking about real life. Century after century of the wisest each generation produced, pondering the eternal questions, storing up wisdom as sacred. Funny how often the Christian point of view lines up with reality. I wonder how that happens? Your point of view almost has a better chance in the case that it really is the Word of God. God might come down and change everything just to suit you. If it's not, though, it's a manifestation of collective unconscious with deeper roots than you can apparently imagine. Along the way it (and it alone) produced and nurtured the civilization of humane scientific rationalism that I presume you admire so much. You have a choice between Israel's God and the Gods of the Copybook Headings. Real life doesn't offer any alternatives. Except maybe Islam (which you seem to disparage, just a bit) along with Confucianism (fancy moving to China?) or Hinduism (which I assume you'd think was no improvement). No real alternatives, there. Atheism is an aberration, which can't support itself down through the generations -- those real life numbers are crystal clear -- largely because of its stance on family and children. Atheist ideologies regarding the relationship of the citizen to the state may have hit Europe hard, but it's atheist ideology regarding the relationship between fathers, mothers, and children that will finish it off.
