"Which is better, capitalism or communism?" We answered that question in the 20th century, with a compromise -- the market-economic welfare state. The vast majority of the human population lives with this system now. Why don't they teach that this is a closed issue?

@Individual_Lives_Matter The actual experience of the Scandinavian countries goes counter to this story. They used to have a more socialist approach to economy, but over time have reduced taxes and government handouts.

@Individual_Lives_Matter The Scandinavian countries are more uniform and smaller, so probably if (when) something doesn't work, it's easier to get everyone on the same page that it doesn't work. America's big enough to factionalize in a pretty serious way, allowing some people to blame other people when things don't work, and imagine that if these ill-defined enemies (the realities of whose business is very unfamiliar) were just under control, everything would be fine.
