"The virtues have gone mad because they have been isolated from each other and are wandering alone. Thus some scientists care for truth; and their truth is pitiless. Thus some humanitarians only care for pity; and their pity (I am sorry to say) is often untruthful." Awesome quote!

@sheilakirwan9462 I think there's a valid point to be made against "being pitiless", that doesn't involve dependency. Taking some care to slow down in school zones just in case a kid runs into the street, isn't the same as teaching a kid it's OK to run into the street.

@lariatjb Evergreen College enrollment went into free-fall after the Weinstein incident. You can learn the skills for most gainful employment online, now. Woke universities can be safely abandoned, and nothing of value will be lost. Traditionalists should prepare, over the next decade, to buy out bankrupt Woke universities and return the to their former glory.

Some ages believed that the Great Heroes were all from ancient times, and the present state of humanity was a degraded form. The Woke believe that they are the only Great Heroes, and all past states of humanity were degraded.

@ltmund They destroyed the Buddhas because the Red Cross had withdrawn their personnel after the Taliban had insisted they exclude women. The archaeologists at the Buddhas sent their female colleagues home, and continued to work. This was seen as emphasizing the well-being of antiquities over the well-being of Afghans, which caused enough bad blood for the Taliban to (spitefully) destroy the statues.

@lariatjb Wow, last February? I follow Bret Weinstein here on YouTube, and I didn't know. Sometimes I wish he were less reserved and noble-minded. Some celebration of this victory would have been VERY sweet!

@lariatjb Yeah, that's on my list of "occasional" YouTube channels. I guess I just missed that episode or something. Benjamin Boyce had a bitter rant about it, not the victory lap I would have hoped. But then, Bridges wasn't run out of his job on a rail, as would have been justice.

He recognizes what Seldon did not, and Asimov only saw dimly, a few books in -- that history is sensitive to small changes in initial conditions. In other words, chaos.

Do you want to flip a switch and make everyone aware of the Great Inheritance of Western Civilization? What does that look like? It looks like going to church every Sunday.

"What happens in America reverberates in other countries" Maybe. I'm absolutely baffled that England (home of the "Bobbies") has any kind of legitimate BLM movement. Are you sure it's not just foreign agitators trying to cause trouble?

I think that the "speed and totality" of "moral and ethical change" is vastly overstated. The reaction is building. The first glimmerings of it are already here. And the Woke ideology is too weak and unworkable to stand against it.

A dirty secret of conservationism -- the hunters are the major driving factors behind the most effective conservation measures. America has big game hunter Teddy Roosevelt to thank for National Parks, and Ducks Unlimited is the most widely popular conservation organization that actually gets anything done. The Sierra Club is useless these days.

Puritanical authoritarian habits, yes. Values, no.

N L Lots of influence, little control.

How is the statement "We are born in Original Sin" mutually exclusive with "We are born free"? The enslavement to carnal sin is the freedom that the radical 60s celebrated, after all.

I'm betting the current spike is Puritan. I'd go further, and say that it's midway between Puritan and Jacobin, and will only last a few years at most.

The Scripture reading for this previous Sunday show why Christianity is better for society than "Woke". In Ezekiel 18, the prophet declares that children were not to be held responsible for the sins of their fathers, but only for their own sins. In Matthew 21, the elders of the Temple confront Jesus, who demonstrates that they believe the only purpose of questions of morality is to trap your political opponents, rather than to seek the Good and the True. Wokeness a corruption of Christianity, at best.

If you like Tom Holland's erudition on the subject of Christian thought through the centuries, you should really listen to this YouTube channel -- it's by a former professor of history of philosophy at a major Catholic seminary in America. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcMjLgeWNwqL2LBGS-iPb1A

@iainrae6159 It may be "the last thing we need", but it's something we always seem to get, one way or another. A "reformed and always reforming" Christian church seems to be the best we have.

@elmike-o5290 The point is echoed in CS Lewis' Mere Christianity with the following: "The most dangerous thing you can do is to take any one impulse of your own nature and set it up as the thing you ought to follow at all costs. There is not one of them which will not make us into devils if we set up as an absolute guide. You might think love of humanity in general was safe, but it is not. If you leave out justice you will find yourself breaking agreements and faking evidence in trials 'for the sake of humanity', and become in the end a cruel and treacherous man. "

In 100 years, the only cultures still in existence will be cultures that recognize that children are important, and whose norms reflect the having of children as a normative behavior. In other words, don't expect current intellectual fashions (as permanent as they now seem) to survive very many generations of biological reality.

Route 66 goes through the plains and the desert. The song makes it sound a LOT more glamorous than it really is. You kind of have to be Hunter S Thompson to make it anything special, and even then, it's just "Bat country".

The Cathar heresy did in fact exist, it had its roots in Bulgaria. The Albigensian Crusade was just one step of the French Crown's systematic exploitation of Christianity to unite France. One part of this plan was exploiting divisions in Christianity to keep France's existential threat, the Germans, from uniting. Once France went secular and started talking up National identity as more important than Confessional identity, they basically signed France's death warrant.
