  10.  @Belzediel  If you're using "rhetoric" in its pejorative case, dismissing its practice as sophistry or deceit, then I suppose there's a distinction to be made. Otherwise, the point stands. If you are literally (A) on a slippery slope and have no restoring force to pull you back up, then you must (B) keep descending that slope and (C) accelerate, because of the force (gravity) that is acting upon you without any counter. This is applicable to the situation we're in, where free speech (the restoring force) has been eliminated from many discussions.

If a system has sufficient pushback, it is in a "stable equilibrium" -- after a perturbation of some kind it will return to its equilibrium state, like a pendulum, or a well-designed commercial aircraft in steady level flight. If a system is designed to have no pushback -- like a social system where a cancel mob (or legal system) can silence its critics, or where a fighter plane's control system is designed to amplify pilot input -- you have what is colloquially called a "slippery slope". The "slippery slope" case is not boolean, it has more complex parameters.

Also interesting to note, Victoria and Albert as children suffered (as children will) under the cultural mores of Regency England, which are very similar to the mores of today. There is a significant chance that the "far right" that Fry so decries, motivated by the same morals, will usher in a similar golden age once in power.

  19. What differentiates the "slippery slope" from the more common historic "political pendulum" effect, is the presence of pushback. In the engineering discipline of Controls Theory, this pushback is called a restoring force. The Cancel Mob, and its allies in Parliament, have attempted to make pushback (free speech) illegal, eliminating the restoring force. This is the reason we're on a slippery slope right now. Anyway, seeing the "slippery slope" as boolean (either it is a fallacy or it isn't) is just wrong. It is a function of whether the restoring force is positive or negative.

If someone says, "Why don't we launch a tiny nuclear attack, for s**ts and giggles?" if there's no one to say, "Because that's an incredibly bad idea", then you've started World War 3. Whatever the Tories or Labor are doing, Britain is still sliding towards oblivion -- there is no one telling immigrants to assimilate, and immigrants have a much higher fertility rate than the native population. This is a slippery slope, and the story of the next decade is going to be, how do you stop it.
