  1. One interesting wrinkle of the American political system, is that Democrats and Republicans were not neatly sorted into Left and Right. In 1860, Republicans were the anti-slavery faction that conquered the South. So, Southerners (both Right and Left) ALL joined the Democrats. These "Dixiecrats" could be and frequently were as far Right as most Republicans, which led to a disconnect between party affiliation and political affiliation.
