It's an interesting question - is Taiwan's style of authoritarian bureaucracy not too far?

  2.  @svenhaheim  I think a lot of the problem comes from the fact that the chattering classes of each country figure they stand to gain power in an authoritarian bureaucracy. The people of these countries, not so much. But, because you end up hearing what the chattering classes are saying, it's hard to hear what Europeans generally are thinking -- apart from election, like Brexit. (And maybe Frexit, now...)

  3. Professor Ferguson, the Thirty Years' War was the (Catholic) Hapsburgs trying to take over Europe. They were opposed by the Catholic Bourbons. Protestants (Swedes) provided an extra army, paid for by the Bourbons, and Protestants (Germans) provided the battlefield. But religion was scapegoated, rather than a real cause.
