  2. One confounding factor here is that there is an "uncanny valley" effect when a man presents like a woman, but just isn't enough like a woman to be comfortable to look at (or a woman who presents like a man, but just isn't enough like a man to be comfortable to look at.)

What is upsetting about listening to other points of view are not the other points of view per se, but the idea that that point of view is going to be imposed on you when you think it's absolute nonsense. If you have the freedom to reject the other point of view, it's far less likely to provoke a strong negative reaction. Liberty is essential to getting along.
