"People are unwilling to sacrifice their own narrow self-interest for the good of the group -- leaders are supposed to convince them otherwise" If the group is no longer celebrated, but constantly deconstructed, of COURSE people aren't going to sacrifice for it. A good leader can convince people that their narrow self-interest (often, sitting on a couch eating crisps, or skimming one's phone) is not as valuable as a common interest (having a family). We pick some self-interests sometimes that are incredibly poor, and we know it.
