His scheme got some of his sons killed. So, it gets worse.

I dunno. People might get tired of hearing all the words you can rhyme with "Walsingham."

@miken227 -- I have loved all of the Extra series, but I can't even get through this one. I liked the original voice of Extra a whole lot better, and I'm still coasting on goodwill from that guy, to be honest. This current one is better than not listening to Extra at all, but letting him do funny voices and cat jokes is a bad decision all around.

@shrimpisdelicious Have you read War and Peace?

Send this message to every city official in San Francisco and Los Angeles -- the poop is back!

Honestly though? I like the shiny. I like the explorations of how new technology can help humanity in its eternal struggle to survive and to thrive. The Right Stuff, Elon Musk, Red Mars / Green Mars / Blue Mars, all that good stuff. The descent to wallow nihilistic madness, without any hope of redemption, is ultimately anti-human. (I still haven't forgiven KSR for Aurora, if you couldn't tell.) The MCU got it pretty much perfect. Nihilistic Thanos, claiming that he is "inevitable" -- trumped by technological humanity, represented by the epic, simple phrase -- "I'm Iron Man."

Martin Luther also recommended occasional overeating, overdrinking, and oversleeping as an antidote for the deadly sin of pride.
2
So why didn't the Napoleonic Wars qualify, as a disaster on par with WWI?
2
Someone get this to the attention of the mayors and city councils of San Francisco and Los Angeles!

We have such massive excesses of productive capacity these days -- we need a frontier, to soak up the surplus. How about space?
2
You mean World War 0.5?
2
"The Madness of Crowds" by Charles Murray is an excellent modern book as well.

Extra History: "The 30YW would not be surpassed in destruction in bodycount until the trenches of World War I." China's inter-dynastic wars, for the last millennium: "Amateurs."
2
By the end of the 30YW, nationalism was much more of a motivation than religion. This is basically the turning point of that, in European history. And yes, this war was more about the Hapsburgs (who owned Austria, Spain, and the riches of the Americas) trying to capture all the marbles, than about religion.

Science fiction takes a new concept in technology and explores the ramifications. Fantasy takes a very old story and explores a retelling. You can do both at the same time -- 2001 is a Space Odyssey, after all. Space Opera is (from this perspective) more Fantasy than SciFi. The distinction is in what you're exploring with your drama, and you can explore more than one thing.

It doesn't present the theme of "passing the torch" because that isn't really a theme in Tolkien. Passing and fading to a lesser generation, is the general theme. Gandalf isn't there to apologize for anything, he's there to stamp out the last scraps of an ancient evil, that in itself is far less than the evil of previous generations.
1
If we aren't well informed, how can we possibly make wise decisions? Well, vote for whatever works from your personal experience. This is why democracy is a thing in the first place. Media doesn't have to play a big role here.

The Japanese sent missions abroad, to find the best modern technology, school system (which they ended up basing on the Germans), and other practices to bring back to Japan. Are records of these missions, and the debates on which foreign practices to adopt, still available today? If so, have they been translated into English?

That's awesome -- EC is pursuing alt tech. Keep it up, guys! (PS, YouTube -- your algorithm is killing your company. Stop censoring, or you'll go out of business.)
1
The premise of this video -- that everyone in humanity looks up at the stars -- is less true now than it was 50 years ago. Light pollution is real, it's affecting the majority of people in developed countries, and it's absolutely preventable, with redesigned outdoor lighting. See this organization for more details .... https://www.darksky.org/

Hold on, Star Wars is without grime? Part of its distinction from Star Trek is that it's a lived-in universe, where your hero cleans the carbon scoring off of second-hand droids. And to leave out The Hero's Journey (no matter how sick of mentioning it you are) in any discussion of Star Wars is negligence pure and simple. By the way, do a few videos on the Vorkosigan saga, just for fun. =)

Problems with the DM comparison: - If one post goes viral, you're suddenly a broadcaster? That's scary. - Who determines what is true? Snopes is a joke, WHO has flip-flopped on everything from masks to lockdowns... Again, just UNPLUGGING and voting your life experience seems best.
1
Hey EC - do an episode on Chinese infiltration of Canada and the Trudeau government =)

Trip Gil Apparently the geography of Mordor was inspired by the Mediterranean basin, with the Towers of the Teeth being the Pillars of Hercules.

@Bill_Garthright And Thomas Paine was seen a bit loopy by the rest of the Founding generation, who saw Human Rights as endowed by our Creator.

Jue Dee: Panic and stress cause harm. That is why... .... There is no war in Ba Sing Sae.

The number of vineyard references in the New Testament make it unlikely that they confused wine and beer.
1
You leave out the bit where the Bourbons and the Hapsburgs spent 30 years killing each other, a generation or so earlier out of family rivalry. Oh wait, that was a "religious" war. Yeah right.
1
By the way, putting the "oo oo aa aa" stuff into the dialog is incredibly irritating. Please stop. It's probably racist or something too, if you need another reason.
1
Um, Luke Skywalker specifically REFUSES the call to reign in hell (from his father, no less) rather than serve in heaven. And I'm not sure that the Avatar people would consider their home anything besides heaven.

Prussians vs. French -- The French had better rifles, but the Prussians had better cannon -- the famous steel guns of Krupp.

@angelicart.6 over eating, eating too much.

Sit tight, Boomer We got this.

The 1st Amendment was created in a media environment that wasn't too much different from Info Wars. Seriously, look at the partisan press back then. They'd be perfectly at home on Twitter. Our press became more professional over time, although was still bad even in the 20th century (I'm looking at you, Hearst.)

Sabaton writes some of the best war memorials ever created.
1
Yeah, I was wondering about that. "Rheinland-Pflaz" is a (West) German state, isn't it?
1
You leave out the part where Christianity* backed the wrong ruling family, in the Sengoku Jidai. * The Jesuits

Um, War - Famine - Plague - Death.

Riddle: If Person A has food for one but no weapon, and Person B has a weapon but no food, which of them dies of starvation? The answer: Neither.

Yeah, these Polynesian explorers deserve statues just as much a Columbus. (The Maori, once they had guns, even conquered a couple.)

I really appreciate the grace and care EC uses to treat this subject.

A candy egg the size of a professional league soccer ball would probably have about 30,000-50,000 calories. Just sayin'.
1
The fall of the Ottoman Empire was inevitable, based on its technological backwardness. The only real surprise is that it wasn't straight up conquered by one of the Western European powers. Arguably, this would have been a humanitarian triumph, as it would have prevented the Armenian Genocide during WWI and the Anatolian Greek genocide afterwards. Saying it was anything other than the "sick man of Europe" is pure revisionism. Extra History, you're better than that.
1
You forgot to mention the gold and silver pouring in form the Hapsburg's New World mines, to add to the inflationary pressure.
1
You have no right to tell Christians we cannot peacefully evangelize -- that is to say, CHANGE PEOPLE'S MINDS -- so that they come to believe in Christ. This is a common blind spot among the "enlightened". As you say, "Do Better".
1
@malogibeaux4946 Dude, do you know what the word "peacefully" means?
1
Because there are insane ideologues who call themselves "Woke", who were born too late to actually make a difference in the fight against racism which has been largely won.

Jeff Bezos is the new JD Rockefeller.

If you are getting too much of your politics from Social Media, you need to GET A LIFE. Live life. Get a job. Have a family. Get by in this world. Allow THAT to inform your politics.
1
So, are we worried about a weakened Russia succumbing to Hokushin-Ron, except with China as the aggressor this time?
1
Fun fact! You can wiretap telegraph lines by digging up a wire, scraping the insulation off of a couple of points on the wire, alligator clipping two leads to the line, and popping the other ends of the leads into your mouth. The pattern of electric shocks across your tongue is the signal. (Do not try this if you have metal fillings.)

Amazon and Google probably have the same sort of information on their competitors, that Rockefeller would get about HIS competitors. These companies need to be taken apart.
1
See England, it's stuff like this that pushes movies like Wonder Woman make a British diplomat Ares instead of the kingpin of the military / industrial complex Friedrich "Fritz" Krupp. Seriously, look at Thewlis' character design. It's Fritz Krupp, obviously.
1
This is very timely. =) I wonder, though, whether idealistic Progressives know how badly their movement is compromised by Big Tech ties?
