You can wiretap telegraph lines by digging up a wire, scraping the insulation off of a couple of points on the wire, alligator clipping two leads to the line, and popping the other ends of the leads into your mouth. The pattern of electric shocks across your tongue is the signal. (Do not try this if you have metal fillings.)
