  1. Science fiction takes a new concept in technology and explores the ramifications. Fantasy takes a very old story and explores a retelling. You can do both at the same time -- 2001 is a Space Odyssey, after all. Space Opera is (from this perspective) more Fantasy than SciFi. The distinction is in what you're exploring with your drama, and you can explore more than one thing.
