  2. In contemporary newsreel footage of testimony before congress, radiation sickness was compared to hypothermia as "a pleasant way to die". Owing to the sacrifice (albeit unwilling) of the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we know that to be a lie. The fact that we knew the truth instead of a lie, convinced everyone during the Cold War that nuclear weapons were too horrible to use, and arguably prevented humanity's extinction.
