"Stalin did have an extraordinary impact on people's lives" He ended tens of millions of them.

"I could make a million starvation-wage jobs." No you couldn't. You don't have a company with the revenue to do that. Typical communist. "My imagination is reality!"

@TL-rh1lf I think it might have been a country that was attacked without warning, by a country that committed atrocities against countries it invaded, and whose population was trained to (and in many cases did) fight without any idea of surrender.... Which country was it that opportunistically declared war hoping for spoils, once the fighting was done?

@L One of the most fascinating archives was the one from the old KGB, presented by an archivist named Mitrokhin. "The Sword and the Shield" is one of his major works - it came out in 2000, featuring information from decades past. It has some extremely interesting reports in it, like the fact that J Edgar Hoover's alleged transvestism was a complete fiction spread by people on the KGB payroll. A literal "communist plot", if you will. There's still actionable intelligence in there -- arrests were made decades after the fact, based on information that Mitrokhin shared. One remarkable thing about the book is how many sexual perverts in America and England were used as KGB spies. This wasn't out of a threat of exposure as you might expect, these people were quite open about their degeneracy. I don't know whether the Russians were attempting to weaken America, or simply because communism is more appealing to this sort of person, but it's too common to be a coincidence.

@imperator692 I'm curious, would you condemn both Clinton / Vietnam / etc, and also Stalin, or are you condemning Clinton / Vietnam / etc but NOT Stalin?

Bezos has destroyed at least as many jobs as he has created. Probably more. Sorry Patrick, but it's true. Amazon hasn't expanded the economy, it has contracted it.

@petarmajstor2370 Nah, "American Propaganda" at the time was Walter Duranty's fraudulent reporting. About twenty years ago the Pulitzer committee finally revoked his prize for that particular bit of useful idiocy.

@John Bob Um, this data doesn't push you towards any particular moral conclusion, about Stalin, his impact on his country, his impact on history, and the ideology he espoused?

"These capitalists wanted markets for their goods - imperialism rises inexorably from capitalism" Kind of like China needs the American market for its exports today? Where exactly did this arise from?
2
"If there were a massive propaganda effort from China to undermine the United States, would we ban it?" There is, and we should. Swalwell, Feinstein, professors at Harvard and countless other universities -- you are deliberately ignorant.

The Germans were Socialists in the 1930s - national socialists. There is little difference between Germany in the 1930s and Russia in the 1930s. There is even less difference between Germany in the 1930s and China in the 2020s.

Here's the biggest surprise in store for people who hate American corporate jobs, who think they would prefer communism... you know office politics? Your entire LIFE is determined by office politics, under a communist system. Kissing up to the party bosses, never getting the work assignment you want, dealing with the faceless corporate bureaucracy to get your work (and living) supplies, horrible co-workers you can't get away from -- all of it. Now imagine... you can't ever quit. And when they fire you, they do it with bullets. "The Office", "Dilbert", and every dystopian office story -- THAT is what your day-to-day life is like. And that's at BEST.

@imperator692 Lol, the only doctored numbers were part of Walter Duranty's cover-ups of the Holodomor. Tens of millions of people under his government dead by his orders, and as much as one-seventh of the Soviet population enslaved in the gulag system. Socialists get their panties in a bunch when 0.7% of the American population is behind bars, for actual crimes. You have to be a particular kind of deranged, and entirely detached from reality, to believe that there's any comparison between America and Stalin's monumental crimes.

Malthus would have had other ideas as to why Stalin looked "successful". So would Thanos, for a more modern comparison.

@chadradwell2593 Not exactly syllogism, but it does balance brevity, and building to a point.

The life expectancy of Russians under Stalin hit its lowest point in modern history, and it's not even close. It's fair to count Stalin's foreign policy in all this.

"Capitalism kills 14 million people a year" No. Not having their s**t together kills 14 million people a year. These people do not have clean water to drink In the natural state of things with no organization, either. In a communist system that doesn't care about its people (hello, Holodomor... the conventional wisdom about Stalin is correct) or one that doesn't work very well (Do you really think Best Korea is going to win, in the end?) people don't have clean water either. And it's vastly more common for communism to fail, than it is to succeed. Even Fascism (like China today) works better.
