Mars is probably as important for free space experience, as it is for habitation. It is also experience in terraforming, which is incredibly useful as well. Do you really think that any given Goldilocks, life-bearing planet will have the same suite of amino acids that Earth does? Unless we plan to burn down everything that was there before, building up from marginal might be a better bet for expansion.
