It's good to remember Martin Luther's essential precursor to Kant's view of Enlightenment ("Throw off the guardians of your intellect")-- "Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Scriptures or by clear reason (for I do not trust either in the pope or in councils alone, since it is well known that they have often erred and contradicted themselves), I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive to the Word of God. In these days, evidence has replaced Scripture, and the Authorities who demand our attention and obedience are experts and studies rather than "popes and councils" -- although there is seemingly not much change in error and contradiction among them. Our own reaction MUST be the same as Luther's if we want to maintain Enlightenment philosophy of freedom from the "guardians of our intellect". Unless convinced by evidence and clear reason, we should not be swayed by talking heads on TV.
