  2. There is a libertarian argument for tax exemption for charity. Imagine for a moment that the government had the primary right to 100% of your paycheck -- a tax exemption for charity would clearly be costing the government something the government had a right to. But picture instead the reality, where you have a right to 100% of your paycheck, out of which you have the power to give some to public goods -- charities -- and the government has a right to collect its portion from the remainder. The other argument is the power to tax is the power to destroy. If a government could tax certain parts of civil society out of existence, there are many bad actors that would do so. In fact, the drive to strip churches of tax exemption is motivated by people with clear antipathy to churches, and in many cases clear authoritarian leanings.
