The major geostrategic question, as I see it, is whether our goal to "weaken Russia so that it can't threaten its neighbors" would simply invite resource-hungry China to invade and conquer resource-rich Russia... everything from Vladivostok to Yekaterinburg. Supercharging China like that would allow China to dictate terms to the world. The most obvious way to avoid that is to come to terms with Russia, and hopefully get them on our side against our real rival.
