  1. During the later Middle Ages, "Modern Monetary Theory" was known as "debasing the currency". This caused kingdoms and dynasties to fall repeatedly. It got to the point that alchemy (fiddling with metals to turn lead into what you claimed was gold) eventually became a *capital crime*. Paul Krugman, take note. On a related note: Alchemists also attempted to distill the goodness of metals that were beautiful and did not tarnish, into an elixir that would prevent human bodies from mortifying -- to stop aging and dying. This led to the first emperor of China imbibing quicksilver ... and dying of mercury poisoning. Fear of death leads people into very stupid decisions. Shutdown proponents, take note.

  2. I'm not sure China would, anymore -- a lot of people are talking about paying for the consequences of the Wuhan virus by cancelling our debt that the Chinese hold.
