  1. The Internet has just allowed women who lie to get more publicity. We're likely to pay more attention to things that could hurt us, so both stories about assault, and stories about assault hoaxes, get more play. Also, the Internet has taken some of our filters off. You write something in what feels like the privacy of your own home, so you're as candid as you would be in a journal, but despite what it feels like, you're actually spreading it to the world. I think that's also what makes us so angry about it all. It's like the Internet is whispering directly into our brains, bypassing our normal defenses. It's weird.
