  1. I suspect that China is at the very least cheering on the self-destruction of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts. The Chinese have probably wanted to destroy that source of American soft power, for decades now. It would probably be useful to track Chinese investment, both formal and informal (bribes), in that sector.

  2. The goal is to eliminate any celebration of Western culture. Most film companies aren't expecting to make a lot of money off of King Lear; Oscar-bait is for prestige, not profit. If there isn't prestige OR profit involved, those films won't get made.
