"Old orders are passing away -- what creature are we building, what do we serve?" "What rough beast, its hour come round at last, slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?"

"Our chief physical pleasure" Easy access to "hyper-palatable" foods is an interesting cultural detour we've taken that has had a similar impact on our health and well-being as screens. It's too bad we're getting hit with both problems at once.

"We don't like the idea that religion is a shield people use against the fear of death" "Death, finitude, gives life meaning" Doesn't removing our fear of death (as good Christian faith should) also give us good Christian patience, to keep us from immanentizing the eschaton?

He needs to grow out his beard like Paul VanderKlay.

@CICMCB If we're looking for wisdom-signals, the more enormous the beard, the better. ;)

@ No, but I have personal experience that it is, in fact, possible. If you're Klavan's wife, congratulations! If not, it's probably better for his family life if he did grow the beard.

"The battle against evil is fought in the soul" Embodying virtues that are not from your soul is not sustainable, but failure to embody good propositions you assent to, is another critical aspect of the problem. Vervaeke is working on the difference between morality and purity, but I'm having trouble challenging the idea that purity / disgust is the means by which our propositional morality is embodied. As far as I can see it's no accident that places like San Francisco, that consciously rejected disgust as a moral intuition, have gone so far down into degradation that they have people messing themselves in the streets now.

"Derrida, who had the integrity to write absolute gibberish" Great line!
