"Why is Bilbo a thief?" I've heard it mentioned that The Hobbit is basically a telling of King Beowulf's Passing (Beowulf and the Dragon) from the point of view of one of Beowulf's companions, who steals a cup which awakens the dragon.

"This tr*ns thing is just the revenge of the repressed, because we don't integrate puberty into any grand narrative" Yeah, most people don't expect to have children - and being in a family down through the generations is one of the most fundamental stories, sources of meaning and relationships, that humanity has.

In some parts of France, there is a tradition of near-hibernation during the winter. Everyone stays very close to one another all day and night, eats very little, and attempts to sleep as much as possible rather than move around.

"Countries that open up the workplace to women do way better on the economic front" How much of that is because work goes from not economically moderated, to economically moderated? How valuable is the non-economic work that by definition isn't recorded in GDP?

Mr. Pageau, question for you about archetypes: Is Mary Sue a valid archetype? She's beautiful, she's perfect, she doesn't have to struggle or train to become so. She frequently has healing powers. All the men around her have their attention drawn to her, everyone loves her, and the world seems to shape itself around her. She solves the problems of the story without having to learn how, although in some tellings, the solving could cost her her life. This despite everyone's best efforts, and she would be universally mourned. If there are difficult problems in her life, they are something like choosing which guy to be with. So... how is this NOT a valid archetype of a female dealing with the issues surrounding bearing children?

"Solomon wishes for wisdom" In Islamic lore, Solomon has a ring that allows him to command demons, which he uses to build his temple. What do you make of that?
